6 Tips to Make a Small Space Feel Bigger

Let’s not beat around the bush here, we’ll get right to it.

Color

Color is the first tip on this list because it makes a huge impact while saving your wallet. To make a room appear larger, you’ll want to paint the entire room that one color – yes, not only the walls but as well as the trim, ceiling and sometimes even the flooring. This trick eliminates that stark line you see in a room where the walls of color meet the typical white ceiling. By doing this, you’re creating an “all as one” illusion, in turn making the space feel and appear larger. Your eyes will fall in love with the effect!

Drawing Your Eye Upward

You can do this with vertical lines or drapes/curtains. Think about how ladies wear high heels to appear taller or how vertical stripes, when worn, create length. Same goes for spaces. One way you can use this method is by hanging window treatments, as in long drapes or curtains, just under ceiling height in a room. This designer trick, or “designer gem”, as I like to call them, creates height. You can apply this same method with thin striped wallpaper, as an example, to give that appearance of a stretch.

Furniture Scale

Ahh, furniture. Everybody’s favorite complex topic.

You want the scale of your furniture to sit appropriately in your space. Having said that, go big! When you place furniture of this scale in a smaller space, it creates abundance, plenitude and makes a statement. Also, generally speaking, furniture with legs is typically on the smaller scale so if you have furniture with legs, be sure to ground it with a visually heavier looking piece to create a sense of balance and order. When too many pieces of furniture are on legs, it makes the room and the occupants feel anxious or nervous – And nobody wants to feel like they’re walking on eggshells. Ease the visuals and the vibes will follow!

Let the Light In

If you have larger windows, please know we all envy you. But for real, allowing the natural light to filter in through the space makes the room appear “lighter”, airy and open. If you have window blinds you may even consider ditching them, if your space allows for it, to hang curtains instead. Hanging curtains allows for more area of light to be invited in because of how you’re able to slide the entire curtain to the side of the window.

In addition to natural light, we have artificial light AKA lighting fixtures. Lighting fixtures can also highlight the individual attributes of a space and make an impact on the scale of your room. By making smart decisions in the ways you illuminate your general space, the focal point or the various unique elements, you give the effect of a space with more volume.

Mirrors

Mirrors are fantastic treasures to incorporate into your space. It really adds dimension and depth along with helping bounce light off surfaces. Different ways you can use mirrors are leaning a large floor length mirror up against a wall paired with other fun accessories or even using one above a sideboard. Get creative with the plethora of ways mirrors can add interest!

Clear Out the Clutter

This may be obvious to some but don’t sleep on this tip! Not only does clutter make your room look stuffed up and congested, it’ll feel that way too. I can never say enough how so incredibly important it is to live in a space that’s free from anything you don’t need! I swear by it, I live by it. When the occupants of a room are unable to function or move about effectively, the occupants will feel confined or restricted. In other words, the room will feel small instead of open. Clear out the clutter and the space will elevate without that extra weight on its shoulders.
